OEM vs ODM — What They Mean in Practice

Two terms come up in every custom ceramic conversation. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) means you supply the design or use an existing product shape, and the factory produces it under your brand — typically with your logo and packaging. ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) means the factory designs the product for you based on your brief — style, material, colourway and size — and you put your brand on the finished item.

INFINITE TOMATO supports both routes. Working with heritage kiln regions across China — Jingdezhen, Dehua, Longquan, Foshan and more — we can replicate specific styles and patterns, apply your logo and packaging, or develop a completely new design with our master artisans. Whichever route you take, the workflow below keeps every stage transparent and verifiable.

The 7-Step Customization Workflow

  1. Share your requirements

Send your brief — product category (tableware, tea sets, vases), target material, approximate quantity, target markets and any reference images. Include your logo files and packaging preferences if applicable.

  2. Select the base product

For OEM, choose from our existing collections to save tooling and development cost. For ODM, brief our artisans on the new design — shape, size, glaze and finish.

  3. Confirm sample specifications

We lock the technical spec sheet: dimensions, weight, capacity, glaze colour, decoration method (hand-painted, decal, underglaze) and packaging. This document is your quality baseline for every later batch.

  4. Produce and approve the sample

We make physical samples for your quality evaluation. Sample shipping cost is on the buyer; the sample fee is refunded against your bulk order. Approve in writing — including photos and, ideally, an in-hand review — before production begins.

  5. Place the bulk order

Confirm quantities and pay the deposit. Standard payment terms are 40% deposit to confirm the order, 60% balance before shipment; we accept T/T, L/C, Western Union and PayPal.

  6. Mass production & quality control

Production typically takes 15–30 days depending on order size. We keep quality consistent with the approved sample across every batch, and make products to international quality standards for our export markets in 30+ countries.

  7. Shipment

Choose sea freight (15–45 days to major ports) for standard orders or air freight for urgent ones. Balance payment before shipment, then we handle export packing, documentation and customs.

Customization Questions, Answered

What is the difference between OEM and ODM?

OEM means you provide the design or select an existing shape and we produce it under your brand; ODM means our master artisans design the product for you based on your brief, and you brand the finished item.

What can I customize in a ceramic order?

You can customize your logo, packaging and the design itself — new shapes, glazes, patterns and sizes. We support both OEM (your design) and ODM (our design for you) across tableware, tea sets, vases and Shiwan ceramics.

How does the sample process work?

We produce physical samples for your quality evaluation before mass production. Sample shipping cost is on the buyer, and the sample fee is refundable once you place a bulk order.

What are the payment terms for custom orders?

We accept T/T bank transfer, L/C, Western Union and PayPal. Standard terms are 40% deposit to confirm the order and 60% balance before shipment.

How long does a custom ceramic order take?

Production takes 15–30 days; some products may require 60–90 days, to be discussed in detail. Sea freight then takes 15–45 days to major ports; air freight is available for urgent orders.
